| Abstract: Fruit flies are one of the most fascinating and diverse groups of insects, commonly referred to as 'Peacock flies' due to the habit of strutting and vibrating wings, and rank among the world's most dangerous pests of horticulture crops. In India, fruit flies have been identified as one of the ten most serious problems of agriculture because of their polyphagous nature and causing a huge economic loss to fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies exhibit genetic variation influenced by the specific host plants they utilize. This variation arises from the flies adapting to the chemical and physical characteristics of different host plants. This variation can be genetic and developmental with the host plant. Feeding habit significantly impacts the genetic variation in different species of Bactrocera with polyphagous habit (generalist) generally exhibiting higher genetic diversity and monophagous species (specialist) showing lower diversity and more distinct genetic structures. Host plant shifts are also a key driver of genetic differentiation. This review highlights the genetic variation in different species of Bactrocera on the basis of their feeding habits on different host plants. |
